TX 23 Hurd
Will Hurd (R) represents Texas’s 23rd congressional district where over 42,000 individuals receive their health care coverage through Obamacare (ACA). Had Texas opted for Medicaid expansion, another 29,000 would be covered in his district, including 13,000 children. Yet he has voted for ACA repeal 7 out of 7 times to take away their health care. Maybe he forgot 58,000 of them are eligible voters. Let’s remind him by spelling it out for him – and painting him a picture.
TX-23 stretches across the southwestern portion of Texas. The district runs along the majority of Texas’s border with Mexico, just north of the Rio Grande from western San Antonio to just outside El Paso. It is a prominently Hispanic-majority district.
In the Presidential race, Hillary Clinton won this district by 3.4%. In the House race, Hurd beat his opponent by 3,000 votes, helped in large part by 10,000 Hillary voters crossing over.
A switch of 1,500 votes (half of 3,000) will defeat Hurd in 2018. We can mobilize 68,000 Health Votes to defeat him.
- 10,000 Hillary crossover votes
- 42,000 ACA enrolled votes
- 16,000 Medicaid Expansion votes
- Total Health Vote: 68,000
With 68,000 Health Votes versus the 1,500 needed to defeat him, Hurd’s Vulnerability Ratio is 45.2(totally vulnerable).

Cut-and-paste suggested letter (personalizing helps):
Dear Honorable Representative Hurd:
Congratulations on your recent election victory by a margin of 3,000 votes.
I am writing to you out of concern about your position on the Affordable Care Act.
If you vote to repeal the ACA, you will be jeopardizing the health and finances of over 71,000 of your constituents – 13,000 of them children.
If compassion for their lives doesn’t sway you, consider the fact that 58,000 of these individuals are eligible voters. Combined with the 10,000 Hillary voters who crossed over to vote for you – and who strongly support Obamacare – 68,000 Health Votes may be mobilized against you, come 2018.
We hope you will do the right thing by your constituents and be a voice for their ongoing health and financial well-being by voting against ACA repeal.
Sincerely,
(Your name here)
